Challenging popular misconceptions of slums in India

City Collab April 03, 2022

On this World Habitat Day, we reflect on the basic right to adequate shelter in our cities. “Housing For All – A Better Urban Future”, the theme for 2020, brings light to an estimated 1.8 billion people (source: UN) who live in slums and informal settlements.

We challenge a few of the popular misbeliefs attached with slum in Indian cities. The global pandemic has highlighted the need for hygienic facilities that help us live, work, and enjoy the security of our shelter. The structural inequality disproportionately harms the poor who form a large part of our economy! We need to acknowledge slums as evolving communities that enjoy varying degree of socio-economic character and provide an option for affordable housing.
